Lung Infections

Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections of the lungs — pneumonia or bronchitis — that fill airways with fluid and impair breathing.

About This Condition

What is a lung infection?

Lung infections are known as pneumonia when located in the air sacs or bronchitis when in the larger airways. They occur when bacteria, viruses, and sometimes fungi collect and begin to grow in the lungs. When this happens, the airways fill with pus and liquid, making it difficult to breathe. Symptoms might include chest pain and a frequent cough.

Pneumonia is a common problem and is typically treated with antibiotics. Occasionally, the inflammation from pneumonia can lead to the accumulation of fluid within the chest — a pleural effusion — which can interfere with proper lung function. If left untreated, lung infections can cause oxygen levels to fall to life-threatening levels.

Common Symptoms

How It's Treated

How lung infections are treated.

  • STEP 01

    Diagnosis and antibiotics

Most patients are treated with antibiotics on an outpatient basis.

  • STEP 02

    Hospitalization if severe

Patients with weakened immune systems — the young, elderly, or otherwise vulnerable — may be admitted for further treatment.

  • STEP 03

    Surgery for effusion

If pleural effusion develops, an operation may be required to drain the fluid.
